Click to Turn to Articles or Choose Arrow Back Towards the end of the "Last Supper" Jesus spoke: John 13:33-35, "Little children, I am with you yet a little while. You shall seek Me; but as I told the Jews, 'Where I am going, you cannot come,' I am now telling you also. 34 A new commandment I give to you: that you love one another in the same way that I have loved you, that is how you are to love one another. 35 By this shall everyone know that you are My disciples—if you love one another." Jesus' farewell speech is recorded in chapters 14 to 17 of John. We examine here in detail chapter 14 as "Jesus is The Way, Truth, and Life" and then next we will view "Jesus' Farewell Speech Concluded" highlighted in chapter 15: Jesus the True Vine, World's Hatred, chapter 16: Work of the Holy Spirit, Sorrow Turned to Joy, Jesus has Overcome the World, & chapter 17: Jesus' Prayer for Chosen Disciples.

John Chapter 14 Examined in Detail |
|---|
|
Now an examination of chapter 14 of the Book of John. To correctly understand scripture, we must apply certain principles of bible study. Understanding and belief should not be based upon any one lone scripture. 2 Peter 1:20-21, "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture originated as anyone's own private interpretation; 21 Because prophecy was not brought at any time by human will, but the holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit." 2 Timothy 3:16, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is profitable for doctrine, for conviction, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." Therefore: 2 Timothy 2:15-16, "Diligently study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing {expounding correctly} the Word of the truth; 16 But avoid profane and vain babblings because they will only give rise to more ungodliness." A key to understanding God's word is examining the context delivered through scripture: Isaiah 28:10, "For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, there a little." John 14:1, " 'Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in Me. Don't be foolish. Psalms 53:1, "… The fool has said in his heart, 'There is no God.' … " Romans 1:20, "For the invisible things of Him are perceived from the creation of the world, being understood by the things that were made—both His eternal power and Godhead— so that they are without excuse." John 14:2-5, "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were otherwise, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; so that where I am, you may be also. 4 And where I am going you know, and the way you know.' 5 Thomas said to Him, 'Lord, we do not know where You are going; how then can we know the way?' " Psalms 37:18, "The LORD knows the days of the upright, and their inheritance shall be forever." Psalms 37:22, "For those blessed of Him shall inherit the earth; and those cursed of Him shall be cut off." John 14:6, "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me." Acts 2:38-39, "Then Peter said to them, 'Repent and be baptized each one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission{forgiveness}of sins, and you yourselves shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all those who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God may call.' " Jesus reveals the Father to us, so we may know of God Almighty. John 14:7-13, "If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also. But from this time forward, you know Him and have seen Him.' 8 Philip said to Him, 'Lord, show us the Father, and that will be sufficient for us.' 9 Jesus said to him, 'Have I been with you so long a time, and you have not known Me, Philip? The one who has seen Me has seen the Father; why then do you say, "Show us the Father"? 10 Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I speak to you, I do not speak from My own self; but the Father Himself, Who dwells in Me, does the works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; but if not, believe Me because of the works themselves. 12 Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes in Me shall also do the works that I do; and greater works than these shall he do because I am going to the Father. 13 And whatever you shall ask in My name, this will I do that the Father may be glorified in the Son." John 14:14, "If you ask anything in My name, I will do it." If you are lusting, you may not receive your requests: James 4:2-3, "You lust, and have not; you kill, and are jealous, and are not able to obtain; you fight and quarrel, but still you do not have, because you do not ask. 3 Then you ask, and you do not receive, because you ask with evil motives, that you may consume it on your own lusts."

How to Love Jesus |
|---|
|
John 14:15, "If you love Me, keep the commandments— namely, My commandments." Do you realize that the God of the Old Testament is Jesus Christ before He was begotten as the Son of God! Exodus 3:14, "And God said to Moses, 'I AM THAT I AM.' And He said, 'Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, "I AM has sent me to you." ' " John 8:28-29, "Then Jesus said to them, 'When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you yourselves shall know that I AM, and that I do nothing of Myself. But as the Father taught Me, these things I speak. 29 And He Who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone because I always do the things that please Him.' " As in times past, some still refuse to accept the truth: Luke 22:70, "And they all said, 'Then You are the Son of God?' And He said to them, 'I am that One, as you say.' " John 14:16-17, "And I will ask the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that it may be with you throughout the age: 17 Even the Spirit of the truth, which the world cannot receive because it perceives it not, nor knows it; but you know it because it dwells with you, and shall be within you. " John 14:18-20, "I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world shall see Me no longer; but you shall see Me. Because I live, you shall live also. 20 In that day, you shall know that I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I am in you." As a spiritual temple we may have the Father and Jesus dwell within us. John 14:21-23, "The one who has My commandments and is keeping them, that is the one who loves Me; and the one who loves Me shall be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will manifest Myself to him.' 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, 'Lord, what has happened that You are about to manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?' 23 Jesus answered and said to him, 'If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him." You may become part of the spiritual temple that is being built! John 14:24-26, "The one who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word that you hear is not Mine, but the Father's, Who sent Me. 25 I have spoken these things to you while I am yet present with you. 26 But when the Comforter comes, even the Holy Spirit, which the Father will send in My name, that one shall teach you all things, and shall bring to your remembrance everything that I have told you." John 14:27, "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give it to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it fear." Rest and be assured of peace from our loving God Family. Jesus has promised to return: John 14:28-29, "You have heard Me say to you that I am going away, and that I will come to you again. If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced that I said, 'I am going to the Father' because My Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it happens, so that when it comes to pass, you may believe." Revelation 22:11-12, "Let the one who is unrighteous be unrighteous still; and let the one who is filthy be filthy still; and let the one who is righteous be righteous still; and let the one who is holy be holy still. 12 And behold, I am coming quickly; and My reward is with Me, to render {reward} to each one according as his work shall be." 1 Peter 1:14-17, "As obedient children, do not conform yourselves to the former lusts, as you did in your ignorance. 15 But according as He Who has called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all your conduct; 16 For it is written, "You be holy because I am holy." 17 And if you call upon the Father, Who judges according to each man's work without respect of persons, pass the time of your life's journey in the fear {reverence} of God." John 14:30-31, " 'I will not speak with you much longer because the ruler of this world {the devil} is coming; but he does not have a single thing in Me. 31 Yet he comes so that the world may know that I love the Father, and that I do exactly as the Father has commanded Me. Arise, let us go out.' "

Summation |
|---|
|
God has highly exalted Jesus Christ: Philippians 2:9-12, "Therefore, God has also highly exalted Him and bestowed upon Him a name which is above every name; 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of beings in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 And every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. 12 So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling."
